Economic inclusion (EI) programs present an opportunity to promote sustainable livelihoods for the poorest. Considering the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP 27) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), there is growing interest in how governments can scale up these programs to increase resilience to climate change and help transition to a greener economy. The social protection and jobs discourse is at an important inflection point in advancing this agenda with economic inclusion programs providing several key interventions that support climate resilient development including (i) adaptive safety nets (ii) sustainable food & eco-systems and (iii) green livelihoods and jobs.

To learn more, watch this PEI Open House, organized in collaboration with GIZ’s ASPects Webinar Series that took place on November 29. The event presented emerging experiences from a diverse range of countries and programs. The conversation will focus on (i) motivation for economic inclusion programs that address climate change priorities and the political economy; (ii) early design and implementation considerations including specific climate adaptation/ mitigation interventions; and (iii) practical lessons in moving forward on a cross-sectoral agenda taking in account concerns across environment, agriculture, and gender.
