#10 PEI Open House | Economic Inclusion and Savings for the Poorest

Savings are a critical tool to build resilience, invest in human capital and take advantage of economic opportunities. However, the poorest and most vulnerable often lack access to secure and convenient ways to save. This is particularly true for women, who represent the vast majority of unbanked adults globally and face additional barriers to access. How can economic inclusion programs help?

Nearly 60 percent of economic inclusion programs facilitate access to savings services, often leveraging community structures and, in some cases, linking to formal financial providers or digital payment platforms. Most programs also deliver financial literacy training and work with program participants to instill a culture of savings. With most economic inclusion programs targeting women as the main recipient of program services, there is great potential to support women’s economic empowerment through access to savings services as part of economic inclusion interventions.

To learn more, watch this PEI Open House to explore emerging experiences from Government and NGO programs facilitating access to savings services and how extremely poor people and other vulnerable groups targeted by economic inclusion programs can be enabled to save to build their resilience and take advantage of economic opportunities.
